Why does pressure drop matter in liquid cooling?

Direct, data-backed answers to the questions that matter before and during deployment.

Pressure drop decides pump sizing and energy: too high needs bigger pumps (more power and noise); too low starves flow and chips overheat. Rack-level systems target ≤80 kPa; the 550 W cold plate measures only 5.8 kPa; manifold branches, fittings and tubing all add pressure drop.

01

Where pressure drop comes from

Cold-plate channels, manifold branches, quick connects, tubing and valves all add resistance. More branches, more fittings and longer tubing raise it — verify section by section in hydraulic design.

02

What is reasonable

Verify the worst branch: flow, pressure drop and temperature window are linked. Available secondary pressure (CDU head minus heat-exchanger and filter losses) must exceed total loop resistance, typically with 20-30% margin.

03

How to troubleshoot

Lower flow with larger delta-T often signals excess pressure drop: check filter fouling, trapped air, partially mated quick connects and valve openings. Section pressure measurements locate it fast.
