Liquid cooling cuts cooling energy sharply: fully liquid-cooled cooling-side pPUE can reach 1.04 and 50/50 mixed about 1.16 (Inspur public data); marketing figures like "up to 40% power and 40% water savings at 45 °C without chillers" are vendor estimates for specific conditions. Actual PUE depends on load, climate and facility.
Cold plates capture heat at the source, bypassing room-level air circulation; 45 °C warm-water return lets outdoor dry coolers run chillerless, and each 1 °C of chiller temperature saves about 4% cooling energy (NVIDIA public data).
Assess by load factor and climate: dry northern climates gain most; humid southern sites need wet-bulb review. pPUE covers the cooling side only; power distribution and lighting are separate.
PUE claims are mostly vendor estimates (Supermicro notes "based on estimates"); negotiate on measured numbers. Retrofits also need the mixed air/liquid period accounted for.
